SPRING 2018 Young Writers and Families Saturday Workshops

March 10 and April 7 (NEW DATE, rescheduled from March 3 due to weather)

These are three separate sessions.  You may sign up for one, two, or three.  Sessions are usually taught by different teachers and include different activities.

Spring Young Writers Workshops are for interested and motivated writers in grades 4-12. Workshops are run by trained Northern Virginia Writing Project Teacher Consultants. Class size is small, with an average of 12 students. Students are assigned to 3 workshop sessions: 2 of their choice and 1 reading/writing group.  Early Writers Workshops are a multi-genre workshop for grades 1-3. The students remain in one room.  In the Family Writers Workshop, young writers, parents, and siblings (kindergarten and up) learn about how to create write nights, preserve writing, and have fun with keeping the writing going from week to week.

Time: 

  • Young Writers (Grades 4-12): 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • Early Writers (Grades 1-3): 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (March 10 and April 7 ONLY)
  • Adult/Parent Writers: 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
  • Family Writers: 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.  (April 7 ONLY)

Cost*: 

  • Young Writers, $75/new students, $65/returning students and siblings  
  • Early Writers, $75/new students, $65/returning students and siblings, **March 10 and April 7 ONLY**
  • Adult Writers (Feb 17: Fiction with Mark Farrington, March 10: Words as Gifts--Family Stories, April 7: Poetry, $25 per person.
  • Family Writers (adults and kids, kindergarten and up), $25 per family, **April 7 ONLY**

Location: George Mason University, FAIRFAX Campus
Tuition:  Rising Grades 5–10: $480.00 
               Rising Grades 11–12:  $530.00*
*(FAIRFAX ONLY:  Includes overnight on Thursday 7/12; activities are scheduled from 9 a.m. on 7/12 until 1 p.m. on 7/13.)  

2018 Student Summer Institute ARLINGTON

Dates: July 23 - August 3, 2018
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Monday through Friday
Location: George Mason University, ARLINGTON Campus
Tuition:  Rising Grades 5–12: $480.00 (There will not be an overnight at the Arlington SSI) 

Once applicant is accepted into the program, a nonrefundable $50 deposit will be required to save a spot.  Full payment (minus the $50) and all health and other forms will be due by May 1.  Payment can now only be accepted as Visa or Mastercard payments (per new University policy).
 

Notification of acceptance decision will go out by email within 15 days of the completed submission being received (applications are read once a week).  The same application is used if you are applying for both the Fairfax and the Arlington institutes (select the "both" option when you register).

See separate registration by grade level below for grade-specific writing prompts. The two required writing samples must be written in response to these prompts.  Please do not send additional writing.  All samples must include the student’s name.

Applicants in rising grades 5 through 8 are required to submit their writing samples in their own handwriting and uploaded as high-quality scanned or photographed images. 

Applicants in rising grades 9 through 12 are required to submit their writing samples as typed Word or pdf documents. 

No writing samples will be accepted by mail.

Rising grades 5-8 must respond in THEIR OWN HANDWRITING to TWO of the following: 

  • Is there a book you’ve read in which there was a character who strongly reminded you of you or where the circumstances were similar to those that you’ve encountered? If so, write about it.
  • Write about a book that is quite old but still one of your favorites.  How does the author’s writing still ring true to you?
  •  Put yourself into one of your favorite books.  How would you try to change the plot or characters?
  • Students have interesting collections like stamps, matchbox cars, or books.  Write about a collection you have and why it is important to you. 

NOTE:  Applications will only be considered WITH a submitted sample.  All writing must be uploaded as a file (photo or scan) to this application.  We will NOT be accepting any mailed-in samples. The camp will take place on the ARLINGTON campus of George Mason University in Founders Hall from 9:30am - 12:30pm, Monday through Friday.

The 2018 cost of the week is $250.00.  Scholarships are available to students on free/reduced lunch programs (you will need to provide a copy of your lunch program certificate) and are first come, first served.  

Once your registration has been confirmed, you will receive an email with payment (or scholarship) information and forms.

El campamento será dirigido por una maestra capacitada por el Proyecto Escriba de Northern Virginia y se llevará a cabo todas las mañanas por una semana. Los estudiantes explorarán y disfrutarán actividades que requieren leer, escuchar y hablar. Este campamento esta dirigido para estudiantes a quienes les gusta escribir y quienes tienen interés en participar. Este programa también se recomienda particularmente a estudiantes quienes están aprendiendo el Inglés como segundo idioma.

El campamento tendrá lugar en el campus de ARLINGTON de la Universidad George Mason en el Founders Hall de 9:30 am a 12:30 pm, de lunes a viernes.
